Quotes:

As long as your focus is growing [your employees], they will be able to focus on that. They get scared—you have to make sure you’re [helping them stay up].” Jim Robinson, (4:46)

My focus is growing people, and in doing that, we’ve had tremendous success. We’ve accomplished tenure where we have people that’ve been with me for 26, 27 years now. And loyalty like that, you can’t put a price point on that. But I can tell you what it takes, and that’s focus, that’s care, that’s growing them at their pace.” Jim Robinson, (7:55)

You’re sharp as a bowling ball if you don’t have diversity [in your company].” Jim Robinson, (11:21)

Having those raw emotions as a leader impacts lives. Nothing changes until there’s an emotional excitement or elevated time. Nothing will change in our growth or experiences or education unless it’s emotionally charged.” Jim Robinson, (19:26)

You’ve got to have the emotion. You’ve got to show that you’re a real person, and you’ve got to show what your purpose and your drive is. And if you explain that clearly, your team will get on board with you. There’s an emotion to that—they’ll buy into that.” Jim Robinson, (22:25)

Whatever your personality is, it’s a gift. Whether it’s creativity or a lack of, it’s a gift. You were given lots of gifts in the world, and you are where you’re supposed to be, why you’re supposed to be there, and when you’re supposed to be there with whatever gift you bring to the table.” Jim Robinson, (26:29)

Diversity, Empathy, and Imposter Syndrome in the Workplace

In this episode of FM Evolution, Jim Robinson joins Shawn Black for the latest edition of their Leadership Series. It’s always a joy to hear from someone with such vast experience and knowledge, and this week is no different. Throughout the episode, Jim and Shawn discuss widespread uncertainty across the market, developing leaders within your organization, diversity, empathy, imposter syndrome, and much more!

Handling Uncertainty

Nearly every industry in our nation has dealt with significant uncertainty over the last two years. Whether it’s inflation, supply chain issues, increased global tension, or any number of other factors, our industries often feel like they shift daily. According to Jim, the best way to keep your team steady and focused is to stay level-headed and concentrate on development and growth. When you keep your team centered around developing new skills, they have less time to worry about issues that your business will power through.

Developing Leaders

Developing leaders can be difficult for many businesses, but it is one of Jim’s strengths. It’s important to recognize each team member’s strengths, weaknesses, and needs. Everyone grows at their own pace, and you mustn’t rush that. While some can advance rather quickly, others prefer to grow slowly. When you understand and accommodate each individual’s timeline, you can maximize your team!

The Importance of Diversity

It’s natural for us to flock toward others who resemble ourselves. Everyone wants to put like-minded people together, but that’s no way to lead a business. Diversity within business is absolutely critical because a single viewpoint can be flawed. When you bring in people with different backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and thought processes, you expand your company’s possibilities.

Empathy in the Workplace

For many leaders, exhibiting empathy can be a challenge. They don’t want to be labeled “soft” or “a pushover,” so they remove emotion from their workplace. Unfortunately, that creates a divide between them and their employees, which can be challenging to overcome. It’s essential to embrace emotion within your leadership position because you must show your own humanity. When you can better relate to your team, you can better empathize with them.

You’ve got to have the emotion. You’ve got to show that you’re a real person, and you’ve got to show what your purpose and your drive is. And if you explain that clearly, your team will get on board with you. There’s an emotion to that—they’ll buy into that.” Jim Robinson, (22:25)
