How to Close the Gap from Where We Are to Where We Want to Be

While everyone’s story is extraordinary, Klyn Elsbury’s stands out from the rest. Klyn was born with cystic fibrosis, and as a result, has taken a trip to the hospital almost every spring and fall that she has been alive. These hospital visits last anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months, and at age 33, she has been hospitalized 67 times. No hospital visits are enjoyable, but Klyn’s possessed extra hurdles. Because of her disease, she was mostly kept in isolation and was unable to interact with groups of people.

Klyn was a prominently successful recruiter, but she lost everything to her disease. Her hospital visits were frequent and lonely, and she turned to the internet for help. She entertained herself by interacting online with several other people who had cystic fibrosis, and she spent much of her time learning about marketing, branding, and sales. When she was chatting with a friend she met through a cystic fibrosis group online, she asked how he kept himself entertained during his extended, boring hospital stays. His answer was simple: video games. Klyn was not satisfied.

She had no desire to sit in hospital beds, play video games, and scroll for the rest of her life, so she decided to dedicate herself to something to solve her boredom. She would write a book. Klyn jumped on linked in and messaged anyone she thought was rich, asking if she could interview them about how they got to where they were. Sure enough, people responded, and she got to interview people about how they built businesses, made it to the NFL, and competed in the Olympics.

So you can always learn something from everybody. I think there’s a danger in having one person that’s influential. I think you should have more people that are influential to you than you can even process.” (16:35)

For most people, writing a book is a complicated process full of long days of writing and editing, but Klyn is different. Klyn can write a book in eight hours. Her brain works in a digital download, meaning that she thinks on a subject, and then all of the content comes at once. Whether it is a book, a keynote speech, or content for a class she teaches, Klyn writes the whole of the project at once.

While Klyn is a two-time bestselling author, she also coaches and teaches leadership courses, gives keynote speeches, and much more. Klyn is devoted to growing leaders that show others how to be leaders. She is not worried about coaching one leader but coaching three generations of people that will influence others.
