“The goal of a leader is to train someone and give them skills and abilities so that someday they can take your job. If you’re not training that person to replace you, then you’re doing that person and the business a disservice.” – Josh Pringle, (6:22)
“I’ve had great mentors in my life where it doesn’t matter whether you are the president of the company or the janitor, everybody puts their pants on one leg at a time. Everybody shows up. Everybody does their part. Everybody pitches in and tries to go the extra mile.” – Josh Pringle, (15:27)
“I think that’s also why authentic leadership and being authentic is so easy and so recognizable now is because there’s so many people that are inauthentic. It makes authenticity and that genuineness shine through.” – Josh Pringle, (25:20)
“I think transparency is important. If you’re being genuine, authentic, and you’ve earned their trust and respect, whether it’s an employee or customer, it’s a given. The minute you aren’t clear and concise and transparent is the minute you stop being genuine.” – Josh Pringle, (37:18)
On this episode of FM Evolution, host Shawn Black sits down with Josh Pringle, the executive vice president of CO2Meter, Inc., a business that designs and manufactures scientific devices for gas detection and monitoring. With over twenty-five years of experience, Josh has proven success in operationalizing comprehensive marketing strategies and managing complex initiatives. Throughout the episode, Shawn and Josh discuss the importance of being an authentic leader and how that influences the company’s culture.
Most times, leaders aspire to create other leaders, which is why the shift in letting employees be uniquely themselves has emerged. Good leaders would rather coach their team members or employees when they need coaching instead of having to hold their hands continuously. It’s easier to hire competent people from the start rather than hiring someone who doesn’t mesh well and forcing them into a box.

Going the Extra Mile as a Leader
One of the most important things a leader can do is lead by example. If leaders don’t look at themselves through the eyes of everyone else, they will be seen as acting superior. In return, the trust that others have in their authenticity will diminish, and they will only be seen as a figurehead. Any owner who wants to run an employee-driven machine can never sit on the high castle and look down.
Employees will never buy into a leader’s ideals or contributions if that leader is seeking praise for doing what is required of them as a leader. Being consistent in your leadership is the best way to demonstrate to your employees that you can be trusted. Consistently showing up and putting in the work, no matter if it seems below what a leader should be doing, is how a culture of loyalty is fostered in the workplace.
