How Public Speaking Skills Can Catapult You to the Top of the Corporate Ladder

Who enjoys speaking in public? Very few actually do, but it is one of the most critical skills a budding executive can have. From being able to connect with an audience to the ability to convey complex facts, stories, or concepts, public speaking is “one of the best ways to drive your career.”

Brendan Kumarasamy from MasterTalk is an artist with words and his skills with communicating have helped him achieve his career goals. And he thinks that others can acquire the same abilities with a little bit of study and practice. Also, it helps if there is a little bit of passion for the field of public speaking to boot.

Kumarasamy describes his time in business school and when he first realized how important public speaking is for a career. Just as professional athletes train for competition, he and his fellow students would practice and drill public speaking and presentation concepts into their heads. They would then head off to competitions sponsored by the biggest firms in consulting, finance, and other industries. Depending on how well they did during the competition, the best students would even get job offers while attending these events.

The biggest challenge in public speaking?

“There’s always going to be a new audience that I’m presenting to.”

What does Brendan mean by that? Specifically, he says that, while you might be confident in discussing your job and the details of that, those skills don’t necessarily transfer to other areas. Whether it is because you lack expertise or familiarity in them or you have not trained yourself to speak on them doesn’t matter as much as knowing you comfort zone as a public speaker – and going outside of it.

“If you want to master public speaking, giving work presentations won’t put you in the top one percent.” [13:55]

Another motivating factor that often distinguishes the best public speakers from those just getting by are the reasons the speaker brings to the presentation. The motivations, goals, and even the background of the speaker is on display during a speech and the best know-how to reveal just enough information and in the right way to make it relatable to vast numbers of complete strangers. At the end of the day, it is passion that a speaker has for public speaking AND the material he is covering the separates him from the rest, Brendan says.

Offering advice, he says of mastering any activity: “If you want to serve the world, be the best at what you do.” [15:15]

The power of public speaking is that it can help those with little money or resources convince others to join their cause. Public speaking not only allows people to get better jobs, but also it is a conduit for social change and progress.

“The only message that matters is that, if you have a message that matters…tap into that message because that is the only way you will become world-class at public speaking.” [22:55]
