“I’ve always classified my leadership style as completely autonomous. We want to be clear where the company’s going, what we are doing, who we are going to serve, and how we are going to add value.” – Jim Robinson, (2:19)
“It’s not for my reading pleasure, it’s for the growth of the individual. Clarity is important. Getting your weekly reports is a priority communication device. They tell you how they are performing individually and as a team.” – Jim Robinson, (11:08)
All reporting is based on growth and experience. Everything we’ve designed over the years follows that line. The Monday goal setting, the Friday closeout, it’s all based on growth. We’re very consistent in the patterns of what we do.” – Jim Robinson, (13:25)
“Some people just need to have a deeper conversation. Other people need a really direct bullet point conversation. But, no matter which type of conversation is needed, be clear on what the expectations are and what outcomes are expected.” – Jim Robinson, (26:54)

A guaranteed strategy for making sure goals and expectations are being communicated clearly across the whole team is to have a weekly report containing all the information necessary for that particular week. You set intentions on Monday, then you check in and close them out on Friday. These reports can be sent to the team as a whole, or personalized reports can be sent to each individual team member that are more geared toward their growth plan

These weekly communication reports help set performance standards, and if those internal standards are being met, the team will far surpass the client’s expectations. Furthermore, weekly reports can help with making a large task seem more manageable. You can delegate and tackle smaller problems that will ultimately contribute to the overall solution. The consistency of weekly reports also provides a baseline that team members can default to when they need to recalibrate or find a starting point.

There is a fine line between compromising your leadership style and adapting to how others are led best. The best practice for staying true to who you are as a leader, while still understanding what others need, is by not wavering in your expectations. Your core values should not change in order for you to be categorized as a flexible leader.

It’s important you don’t jeopardize the integrity of your leadership by basing how you lead on somebody’s personality. How you lead a team member or employee should rely on what elicits their best performance, not on if you like their character traits or not. Knowing the complexities of an individual should only influence your leadership in a way that provides insight into how to help them grow, not give you reasons on which to make personal judgments.
